How do you stay strong and gentle at the same time when you are a man in prison?
Who I am Today!
How do you stay strong and gentle at the same time when you are a man in prison? I started a new, never been taught before class last night at Folsom Prison called “Who I Am Today.”
My leadership team is taking the reins. All seven Soaring Eagles were asked to invite two men into this three week class.
The Eagles came up with, and voted on the name “Who I Am Today.” They want to help their fellow inmates see, understand, and acknowledge, the personal growth and development they’ve seen in their friends.
Group
Last night was intense. Picture two hours of sitting in a circle fully exposed to one another (usually we have tables) talking about your personal definition of manhood, who you were, who you want to be, and who you are today.
We have different races, cultures, ages, religions, and belief systems in our circle. In fact there are some extreme differences, but it was the similarities that brought the group together.
Many tears were shed as we shared about gangs, guns, expectations, criminal activity, and race. In addition to the negative talk they discussed love, joy, trust, fears, hopes, growth, and manhood. The goal when I work with these men, is always to help them be the BEST version of themselves everyday, in every way, in every situation they get involved in.
Proud
As I sit here this morning reflecting on last nights class, I realize I couldn’t be more proud of what I saw in that circle last night. It was real and it was raw. It’s about taking things one day at a time and realizing it’s about the progress not about being perfect.
