- Get a good mattress. It is not fun to wake up achy and hurting all over.
- Make sure your pillow protects your neck and is comfortable.
- Your room needs to have a calming effect. I changed the color on my walls three times before I felt calm enough to sleep peacefully. It was worth the agony and effort. Now I love to be in my room.
- Keep your bedroom as clean as possible. Wash your sheets weekly in hot water to kill germs. Dust on a regular basis. A clean room creates opportunity for a peaceful sleep.
- Get and keep your room as dark as possible. Keep computers and cell phones in the other room. Dim your clocks or cover the light with a cloth. The darker the room the better you sleep.
- Pick artwork for your walls that brings you joy and makes you feel calm. Nothing that agitates you should be in the bedroom.
- I always have a bottle or two of water beside my bed. I always wake up thirsty.
- Turn the temperature in the house down. Research shows people sleep better when the temperature is set at 65 degrees. At our house we keep it at 66 degrees, my hubby gets very cold when it drops lower.
- Watch soothing shows before going to bed. Violent programs cause restlessness and anxiety in many people.
- Unwind in the bathtub. Soaking in a hot bath feels wonderful. Stepping out of the tub causes the body to cool down pretty fast and lower a body temperature helps you sleep better, deeper and longer.
