Five Tips to Beat Holiday Stress.

27 Aug

Around labor day I buy a clove, cinnamon, pumpkin, apple ISH candle to get me ready for the next season. Right now the days are getting shorter which means summer is coming to an end. It’s hot during the day but, the early mornings and late nights are much cooler.
A few clients this week have talked about the stress related to the upcoming holiday season. Yes, holidays on the best years can be stressful and emotional. But, what happens when you already believe this year is not going to be a joyful holiday season?
Here are five tips on how you can get ready for the 2018 holiday season:

1. D’clutter, this means your expectations, ideas, decorating, baking, crafting, party plans, and yes even your possessions. Make your life delightfully simple in this year.

2. Be actively involved in your own story. Don’t allow yourself to lurk in the background and become invisible. Hiding out doesn’t help. Encourage yourself to mix and mingle with small groups of friends.
3. Think about hosting a small gathering at your home. Keep it simple, something like movie night, mimosas morning, game night, or a pizza party. Make plans that feel fun and relaxing for you. I have Java with Julie coffee breaks throughout the year. I bring six women to the kitchen table, we visit and drink coffee. It’s emotionally supportive, fun, easy, and relaxing.

4. Eat well, sleep well, and limit alcohol. Excessive drinking can amplify negative feelings. Take several 10 minute walks during the week because it will boost your heart rate and release mood-boosting endorphins.

5. Be open to making some new traditions. Reach out to family or friends for support so you don’t isolate. Instead of holding out for what the holidays SHOULD be allow new traditions to unfold.
