Fear is Healthy/Panic is Deadly

1 Oct

If you are drifting back into old unhealthy behavioral habits don’t panic!  A healthy dose of fear is a good thing.  It lets you know something is wrong and, you need to make a change before things get too out of hand.

Panic can lead to unhealthy binges, quitting exercise routines, smoking, illegal drug use and other unhealthy behaviors that are used to soothe.

In the movie “Chasing Mavericks” the surfer saw a shark while diving and began to panic and splash. His trainer told him “Don’t panic, be alert, breath, and slowly swim away to safety.”

When I have behavioral drift,  I pay attention to my behavior, take many deep breaths, and I  slowly step away from the candy dish, chips, cake, or whatever is catching my attention during the drift.  I tell myself,  “you are not going to gain a 100 pounds back in one week.  Don’t panic.  Accept the healthy fear and get back on track RIGHT NOW!”
