It rained all weekend at my house last weekend. I just wanted to hunker down and eat comfort food. I had no intentions of going to the store so instead I went shopping inside my refrigerator. I gathered all the vegetables from my refrigerator, cut them into pieces, then added canned tomatoes, broth, wheat pasta and some spices. I cooked my vegetables all day in my crockpot. For dinner we had a terrific bowl of vegetable harvest soup without ever leaving the house.
Make things simple for yourself once in awhile. Let go of the need to be perfect. Instead put your effort into being present. After I started my crockpot, I spent the rest of the day, preparing for a class I am teaching in November, I lit candles that smell good, gave myself a facial and painted my toenails. I also took a short nap and read a pleasure book. In other words I relaxed and enjoyed spending the day at home with myself.
I let go of making the “perfect” soup with the “perfect” ingredients, and you know what? Nothing bad happened. In fact we are having leftover harvest soup for dinner again tonight and I can’t wait.
The holiday season is once again upon us. I am going to try to relax and enjoy them this year. I want to be present in the moments of the season. Most of my family lives out of state and will not be around. My mom, who loved Christmas, has passed on. My Dad, who could do without Christmas, only enjoys coming over for coffee and a pizza.
I will start making new traditions for myself. I harvested my vegetables from my refrigerator for my vegetable harvest soup. Now I will start harvesting ideas that will lead to new holiday traditions that work for me. I love bringing joy into my life in the simplest way. Who knows, maybe next I’ll create a traditional holiday crockpot soup and eat it on the best china by candlelight.
