About Progress Not Perfection

Clutter Busting my guestroom today at 1:00 p.m.

25 Oct

Today at 1:00 p.m. I have an appointment with myself to Clutter Bust my guest room.  I’ve been “meaning” to do this all summer but it just hasn’t happened.  I had other more pressing things I wanted to do, or had to do, or thought I had to do.  So today I have a date with myself and my room.

Have you ever felt blah as soon as you stepped into a cluttered room?  Well, clutter can actually cause stress hormones to build up in your body.  I know I feel so much more relaxed when my house is in order.

When I work with clients to Clutter Bust a home, a room, cabinets, garage etc.  I use the SMART skill  approach:

  1. Set a goal-  I want to Clutter Bust my guest room.
  2. Monitor progress- I will be working in my guest room from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  3. Arrange my world for success- I have an appointment with myself.  I have empty boxes to take items to charity or to the trash can.
  4. Recruit support- I told my husband I will not be available for three hours this afternoon while I work on this room.
  5. Treat yourself- After Clutter Busting I will place fresh flowers on the dresser, light a terrific smelling candle and read a book for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Is it time for you to restore order?  Set small achievable goals.  Start with the room you spend the most time in, then focus on one area at a time.  Perhaps the bedroom closet or a drawer in the kitchen or a shelf in the garage.  Start small so you don’t get into overwhelm.  That little bit of tidying will energize you, getting you ready to take on the next cluttered spot.  If you need additional support with your project or just need help getting started shoot me an email at Julie@woodworkerlifecoaching.com and we can make an appointment.
