Got Clutter?

Got Clutter?  How many people absolutely love everything in their home?  My guess is not many.

In the past week I have conducted two Got Clutter? workshops.  Over 110 people attended.  Most of the participants shared they have “So much stuff and do not know where or how to begin downsizing.”  Some people even shared they no longer know what they have or where some of it came from.

I keep asking myself, my clients and people in my workshops, “Why do you think stuff is so important?”  Most people say the objects hold memories, it’s worth money, or someone might need it.  People accumulate belongings, get overwhelmed and don’t know how to downsize or how to get started sorting through their stuff.

If it was easy to downsize our belongings everyone would “just do it.”  Wouldn’t it be nice if your home did tell the story of who you are?  It feels great to be surrounded by a collection of things you truly love.  It is better to have fewer things you love than more things you don’t know what to do with.

Less is more.  You could gain more time, more space, more joy, more time to relax ,and more time not being stressed over what to do with all your stuff.

Pick an area in your home that needs to be d’Cluttered.  Set your timer for 10 minutes and get started.  You will be surprised how much you can get accomplished in 10 minutes.  The best way to get started downsizing your clutter is to commit to starting.  Find some items that can go immediately into the trashcan.  Then find things you feel good about donating to charity.  Think about what you will be leaving to your family and friends.

Make sure your friends and family really want the belongings you plan to leave them.  I found out my son did not want all the things I was saving for him.  Together we picked out what he wanted and what he hoped I would donate to charity.  This gave me permission to get rid of stuff I didn’t want to keep.

My wish for you is you pick an area in your life that need some d’Cluttering, set your timer for 10 minutes and start downsizing.
